The Christian environment at St. Pius X School is evidenced through classroom, hallway decorations, prayer tables, and most of all, through the example of the teachers. Since the 1990-1991 school year when faculty members attended the NCEA Vision and Values Leadership Training Program, the faculty and students have focused on one particular value and theme each school year. This is commenced and implemented through the first school Mass. Some of the themes implemented over the years are: service to others; respect for others and oneself; love for one another; seeking God's wisdom; experiencing God's mercy; calling to forgive; working toward peace; building hope; displaying how charity builds community; encouraging students to pray until something happens; building friendships; emphasizing how families are first and forever; those who bring kindness to others, cannot keep it from themselves. The students are then encouraged to integrate these Christian values that are part of the Catholic education into their daily life.
As a school community, our day begins with the Morning Offering followed by special intentions for students, their families, persons who are ill, and ones who are in need. Prayer is a part of each class every day. The students and faculty pray before and after meals. Religion is evidenced in the spiritual formation of the faculty, as teachers actively participate not only in faculty retreats, but also prayer services, special faculty Masses, Stations of the Cross, and special religious parish functions. Many faculty members are Eucharistic Ministers and lectors for school and for parish Masses.
Religion classes are taught on a daily basis, and all aspects of the Catholic faith are explored: Mass, prayer, scriptures, sacraments, morality, sexuality, and liturgical celebrations. The Catholic Identity Standards set forth by the Archdiocese of New Orleans are incorporated and implemented into each unit design in all subject areas.
The faculty and the student body in grades Pre K 4 through seventh attend Mass usually once a week. At these Masses, the students and teachers participate through readings, prayers, petitions, drama, altar servers, and gift bearers. At certain Masses, parents and grandparents participate with the children. The school sponsors the Living Rosary in October, a live Nativity in December, the Passion Play and Stations of the Cross prior to Easter, and the May Crowning in the spring. In addition, the school also sponsors events in conjunction with the parish such as the Blessing of the Animals and the Blessing of the Children.
In the lower school, the students receive the sacraments of Reconciliation and First Eucharist in the second grade. Along with celebrating the First Eucharist, the students participate in a Last Supper celebration, which enhances their preparation and understanding of the Eucharist. Parental participation is encouraged through workshops for parents prior to the students receiving the sacraments.
In the middle grades, a Family Life Program (values, morality, and psychological development) is offered to students in grades 5-7. The seventh graders attend an overnight retreat at Rosaryville. This retreat is designed to help the students discover their Catholic Identity and to grow in spirituality.
The " U.S.C.C.B. Safe Environment Plan Child Protection" is implemented in all grades including a workshop for teachers and parents. All students are encouraged to help people in need through a Service Learning Program.
The faculty continues to work towards certification in religion. Daily bulletins contain information regarding religion classes, saints of the day, and suggestions encourage prayer and worship. Faculty meetings begin with a prayer and/or prayer service. The faculty Spirituality Committee continues to provide ongoing spiritual guidance and opportunities to grow in faith. Special themes are designed for the Advent and Lenten seasons. Classroom teachers share the Advent Wreath and prayers with their homerooms.
