Pre-Kindergarten Curriculum

I. Religion
In our religion program, the teachers reinforce the students' concepts of self and their relationship to God, to other children, and to adults. In addition, the teachers encourage awareness of God, the life of Christ, the blessed Mother, and the Saints. The teachers strive to make the school environment a place of Christian love and understanding. It is a place where children can grow in the knowledge of God's love for others.

In Pre-Kindergarten, just as at home, children have the opportunity to learn Christianity by living it. The teachers not only tell the class about kindness, gentleness, and generosity, but provide children with the opportunities to experience these values.

Discovering God's World, a religion readiness program published by Sadlier for four-year-old children, is used to develop our children's faith through beautifully illustrated stories and hands-on activities.

The teachers utilize the materials and techniques of the other subject areas to plan interesting, meaningful activities in religious instruction. Listening to simple Bible stories, creative art projects, singing songs, role playing, and telling stories provide first steps in the religious formation and education of children. Basic prayer such as The Sign of the Cross, Hail Mary, Our Father, Morning Offering, and Prayers Before/After Meals are taught to enrich the student's prayer life. Pre-Kindergarteners also attend many of the schools Masses.

II. Language Arts
The children learn to identify all of the letters of the alphabet and one sound for each of these letters. This is accomplished through our Kinderventures Program, The Alphabet Activity Book, alphabet songs, and various other "hands on" activities.

III. Math
In our math program, emphasis is focused on the development of concepts. The children learn number concepts and operations with materials that can be manipulated. Children work with blocks, designed to help the children achieve an understanding of mathematical concepts without the pressure of memorizing symbols.

Kinderventures Math Around Us is also a part of the pre-kindergarten math curriculum. The following description from the creators shows its many facets. "Math Around Us", is a multi-sensory math curriculum that is part of the Kinderventures family of early childhood programs. Math Around Us incorporates the use of videodisc, manipulatives, computes, literature, and music to introduce math concepts to young learners. It also has strong connections to other disciplines, such as language arts, science, and social studies."

IV. Science and Social Studies
Science and Social Studies are an essential part of early childhood programs. Since our program has highly integrated curriculum, science and social studies are taught through a variety of activities across the curriculum and incorporated as well in library, art, music, and physical education. This multi-sensory approach provides for an enjoyable learning experience.

Science and social studies concepts are covered in many of the Kinderventures units such as "Amazing Me", "Feed Me", "Out and About", and " On the Move".

V. Specialist
The children will attend art, music, physical education, library, and computer once a week. Speech Therapy is also available to students who qualify through the services of Orleans Parish.

LEARNING CENTERS

Centers provide opportunities for active learning. They strive to meet children's individual needs, allow children to make choices and decisions, develop initiative and self reliance, and allow time for them to interact with other children. The following centers provide opportunities to meet these needs:

I. Book Center
Develops interest in reading, leads to discussion about important topics (safety, friendship, hygiene, etc).

II. Puzzles and Games
Enhances fine motor skills, reinforces classification skills, and logical thinking skills.

III. Bean Table
Builds pre-math skills, logical thinking, measuring and estimating hand-eye coordination.

IV. Housekeeping and Workshop

V. Art Center

VI. Building Toys

Some Final Notes

St. Pius X School is proud and happy to offer a complete program that strives to meet the developmental needs of young children with both structured and unstructured learning activities. Remember that your own reactions and attitudes will go along way towards determining how your child feels about school.

Help your child look forward to school. Talk about it in a friendly way so that your child will think of it as a happy place. Discuss school activities, school friends, new experiences, and new things to learn.

If your child expresses doubts or fears, do not pass them off. Try to answer all the questions in a positive, reassuring way and let your child know there are friendly people to help him or her out.
