
The library is equipped with over 9,000 volumes of printed material cataloged utilizing the Dewey Decimal system, an extensive collection of audio-visuals, reference materials, automated checkout, computerized card catalog, and Internet access. It offers a variety of materials for student use including books and vertical file materials. Periodicals provide recreational reading, which stimulates the student's interest in reading. Nine computer systems complete with the Internet give students and teachers access to current reference materials. OPAC (Online Public Access Catalog) is currently available on computers school-wide for teacher and student use.
The librarian coordinates library/media services to all students and faculty. Parent volunteers provide assistance in all areas of the operation of the library. Award winning literature is introduced to the students through story time sessions and short book videos are used as motivational tools to promote reading. The librarian goes to the PreK-3 classroom weekly for 25 minutes to present a multifaceted program which reinforces the monthly theme of the its curriculum. PreK-4 and Kindergarten classes come to the library once a week for a 40 minute visit in which three to four activities are presented in support the letter of the week that is being studied. Students in Grades 1-7 are scheduled for regular weekly library visits during which library skills are taught and each student is given the opportunity to check out books. Storytelling, videos, and various activities are presented on a weekly basis to promote a love of reading. In Grades 4-7, the emphasis shifts to include research projects using the Modern Language Association rules and search skills are taught to enable the students to produce effective and interesting projects.
The operating hours for student use are from 8:00 a.m. until 3:35 p.m. each school day. The library is available at the students' recess twice a week for the lower school and twice a week for the middle school. Special arrangements can be made for the library to remain open after school hours until 4:30 p.m. for students completing special projects.
