Accomplishments
St. Pius was selected by the Archdiocese of New Orleans to participate in the
State Department of Education’s Total Quality Schools Management Program. The
school's efforts were acknowledged in the nationally published magazine Quality
Progress, in the Clarion Herald, in City Business, and by the Chamber of
Commerce and Cox Communications. In 1994, the school was awarded $56, 500.00
from a state grant proposal, "Moving Math into the 21st Century." Numerous
grants have since been awarded to SPX providing an opportunity to update the
computer lab, laptop lab, library, and science lab that provide continuous
opportunities for the expansion of knowledge in creating projects that
incorporate research and writing. Classroom equipment and appearances now
provide an opportunity for a technological multi-faceted approach to teaching to
meet the needs of many types of learners. Our students have won District and
City Championships in volleyball, basketball, indoor ball, and football.
Students have placed in city contests in art, math, essay, and spelling. The
Middle School won first place in the city's elementary quiz bowl (thirty-seven
schools participated) as well as first and third places in the Middle School
Math Tournament. The school choir and the band have received superior ratings
at both the state and the district choir festivals. The Middle School students
received the Most Outstanding Community Service Award in Orleans Parish from the
Brown Foundation and was recognized for community service participation by the
Kiwanis Club. Staff personnel received recognition from the following: the
