Activities Guide

St. Pius X offers their students and families a variety of activities and opportunities.  Below is a brief explanation of items listed on our school calendar.  All activities and dates are subject to change.  Please read the Panther Press and St. Pius X Church bulletin to confirm dates and times of activities.


All Saints' Day Mass  
Kindergarten students plan and participate in this school Mass dressed as their patron saint.

Appreciation Week  
In conjunction with Catholic Schools Week, a week is designated to honor faculty, cafeteria, maintenance, principals, secretaries, and pastors for their service to our school.

Athletic Activities 
Several of our faculty, coach a variety of after-school athletic activities for our students.  Some sports include flag football, volleyball, cross-country track, basketball, cheerleading, and cabbage ball.  Our Men’s Club also offers a Sports Program.

Back to School Coffee  
Parents are invited to attend a social with coffee and pastries. Information on joining the Mothers' and Men's Club is available.

Back to School Night (Parents' Open House) 
The meeting begins in the Father A.T. Screen Gym. The pastor and the principal speak and introduce the faculty.  Then, parents visit their child's classroom(s) to meet their child’s teacher(s).  (Adults only-no students)

Back to School Party 
Back to school social for parents sponsored by the Mothers' and Men's Clubs.

Balloon Day / Bubble Day 
On the last day of school at St. Pius X, balloons are provided by the Student Council and given to the 7th graders. Balloons are released into the air at the end of the day while the rest of the students blow bubbles.

Band 
After-School Band is offered to St. Pius X students in grades 3-7 on a weekly basis.  Instruments are not provided.

Bingo/Pizza
Bingo/Pizza Night is held in conjunction with the Family Sunday weekend.  Students, parents, faculty, staff and guests are invited to attend.

Blessing of the Animals 
In recognition of the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi, parishioners, and St. Pius X families are invited to bring their pets to the school yard for a blessing.

Blessing of the Children 
Blessing of the Children for all children held after the 11:00 am Mass.

Book Fair 
A book sale is held and classes are assigned specific shopping times.  Parents are encouraged to attend and shop with their children. Teachers post "wish lists" at the Book Fair of books they would like to have for their classrooms.

Catechetical Sunday 
Catechetical Sunday recognizes all those involved in teaching religion in St. Pius X Parish. A ceremony recognizing all faculty, staff and administrators is held at the 11:00 a.m. Sunday Mass.

Catholic Schools Week 
A week long celebration is held by St. Pius X School and Archdiocese of New Orleans to acknowledge the Catholic Identity of our Catholic School system.  A special Mass is held by St. Pius X to honor staff for their long-term commitment to the school and another Mass is sponsored by the Archdiocese to honor schools for achievements.  St. Pius X was honored for achieving the national accreditation for Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) and the national Blue Ribbon School of Excellence.

Choir 
Open to students in grades 4-7 once a week after school.

Christmas Shirt Day 
Students may wear a decorated Christmas shirt with uniform pants/skirt.

Confetti Eggs 
Confetti eggs are sold at the St. Pius X Fair. Cleaned eggshells are due a few weeks before the fair. To prepare the eggs, make a hole in the top of the egg (approx. the size of a nickel) and rinse well. Send two cartons of eggs for each child to our Art Department.

Family Sunday 
A celebration of “family” sponsored by our parish. Families from the Parish are asked to bring up the offertory gifts at the Masses.

Field Day 
Students compete in sports activities. Competition includes individual and team events with ribbons awarded. Each class orders matching T-shirts. The lower school's activities are held at St. Pius X campus and the middle school's activities are held at Metairie Playground.

First Communion 
Second grade students and CCD students receive their First Communion. A reception follows hosted by the Mothers' Club.

Fish Fry 
An event held during Lent for St. Pius X families, parishioners, and friends.  The Fish Fry is sponsored by the Mothers' Club and Men's Club. Dine-ins or take-outs are available.

GALA 
A GALA is sponsored by the St. Pius X Parish and School proceeds
will be used for capital improvements from upgrading technology to improving our arts and science laboratory programs.  The Gala includes a Patron Party, auction, and dinner.

Grandparents' Day 
Grandparents are invited to visit school and attend Mass and classes with the students.  Our students create and design special gifts for their grandparents and give them a tour of their classrooms.

Halloween Shirt Day 
Students may wear a decorated Halloween shirt with uniform pants/skirt and shoes or an appropriate Halloween costume.

Halloween Festival 
Halloween Festival (sponsored by the Mothers' Club) is a fun night of games, food and a haunted house (sponsored by the Men's Club) held on school grounds. Donations for the Cake Walk, Parade of Prizes booth, and the Sweet Tooth booth are encouraged. Parent volunteers are needed to work booths.

Kindergarten Program 
This program is held at the end of the school year. This is the last day of school for Kindergarten and PreK. The Mothers' Club hosts a reception after the program.

Last Supper 
In preparation for receiving the Sacrament of First Communion, the 2nd grade and CCD students participate in a prayer service and re-enact the Last Supper. This event is organized by the 2nd grade room mothers.

Living Rosary 
The Living Rosary is held at school with the students lined up in the shape of a rosary. Student representatives from each class lead the prayers of the rosary. Parents are welcome to attend and participate.

Mardi Gras Shirt/Costume Day 
Students may wear a Mardi Gras shirt or costume to school with uniform pants/skirt and shoes.

Mardi Gras Parade 
A Mardi Gras parade is held on the school grounds sponsored by the Mothers' Club.  A Royal Court is selected by a drawing each year.

May Crowning and Mothers' Day Mass 
Students bring flowers to school to be placed on the altar for a Mass to honor Mary. The first grade students and their mothers participate in this Mass.

Men’s Club Meeting 
Meetings are held during the school year, usually on Wednesday evenings. The pastor reviews upcoming events, officers give committee reports, and a special guest speaker is featured. Refreshments are served.

Men’s Club and Mothers’ Club Joint Meeting 
A joint meeting is held once a year with the men and women followed by a social.

Mothers' Club Meetings 
Meetings are held during the school year, usually on Wednesday evenings. The principal and pastor review upcoming events, officers give committee reports, and a special guest speaker is featured. Refreshments are served.

Mothers' Club Installation Luncheon 
The outgoing Executive Board Members of the Mothers' Club welcome the new Executive Board at the spring luncheon.

Masses 
School Masses are held three times a month, usually on Thursdays, at 9:00 a.m. Each grade plans a Mass including selecting a theme, songs, and acting out the gospel. The grade planning the Mass is shown in parentheses on the school calendar. Parents are always welcome to attend.

Parent to Parent 
A program designed for parents to keep them informed of current issues effecting our children.  The program is held in the fall and spring.

Parent-Teacher Conferences 
These Conferences are held twice a year. The teachers schedule conference times with the parents and students.

Pilgrim/Indian Dress Day 
In preparation for Thanksgiving, students may come to school dressed as a Pilgrim or an Indian. Goods are collected for Thanksgiving baskets to be distributed to the needy.

Prospective Parents Open House 
This meeting provides information about St. Pius X to prospective parents.  Tours are conducted by St. Pius students, teachers, alumni, and parents.

Pumpkin Patch 
Sponsored by the Men’s Club, students decorate pumpkins.  Ribbons are awarded to students who are selected “the best” in their selected category.  The contest is held prior to the Halloween Fest.

Reconciliation Service 
This is for all First Communion recipients. A reception follows hosted by the Mothers' Club.

Safe Drug Free Project  
A drug abuse prevention and self-esteem program is offered to students. Parents volunteer to lead activities with the children in Kindergarten through fourth grade. The Guidance Counselor and PE Instructor coordinate the program with the children in fifth through seventh grades.

Scouts 
Offered after school to boys in grades 1st – 7th and girls in grades K-7th to enrich our students morals and character.

Spaghetti Dinner 
Sponsored by the Mothers’ Club, this is a winter social for the St. Pius X families, parishioners, and friends.

St. Patrick's and St. Joseph's Day Mass and Altar 
The Kindergarten class coordinates this school Mass honoring St. Joseph and St. Patrick. Kindergarten students' fathers are invited to participate in the Mass. A St. Joseph's Altar is prepared by the cafeteria staff.

St. Pius X Band and Choir Christmas Concert 
In keeping with the holiday spirit, the band and choirs of St. Pius X perform a Christmas concert in our gym at 2:30 p.m.

St. Pius X Fair T- Shirt Day 
Students may wear any St. Pius X fair t-shirt to school instead of their uniform shirt.

St. Pius X School Fair 
Food, games, music and fun for all. Each class performs a musical number on the stage as part of the entertainment. Many volunteers are needed for the booths. Parents are required to work 2 hours per child.

Spirit Day  
Students and teachers demonstrate school spirit with a pep-rally. Classes perform cheers in preparation for field day, which is held the following day.

2-Liter Tuesday 
Prior to the Halloween Festival and the St. Pius X School Fair, 2-Liter Tuesdays are held to collect 2-liter soft drinks to be used at these and other school events. Each class is assigned a specific type of 2-liter soft drink. Each student is asked to bring one, specified 2-liter soft drink on each 2-Liter Tuesday.

Transition Meeting  
At this Mothers' Club Board Meeting, Committee chairpersons turn over all of their information to the new Committee chairpersons for the upcoming school year. Mothers' Club members may sign up for committees at this meeting.

Uniform/Booksale Day 
SPX sweatshirts, boy school shirts, and assignment pads will be available for purchase. Information will be available concerning the Mothers' Club, Men's Club and After-School Program.  Interested parents may join at this time.

Volunteer Party 
A party is held for all adult fair workers in appreciation for their time and commitment. Music and food are provided.

Wrapping Paper Fundraiser 
This fundraiser begins in September. The catalogues contain wrapping paper, ribbons, bows, gifts and candy. The Mothers' Club receives 50% of the profits to be used for school improvements.
